A landslide has swallowed up two backyards in the Austin Ridge neighborhood. Stafford County fire officials have condemned the houses, displaced the owners, and now the long road to recovery looms ahead.
There is no good explanation for what caused the landslide. In the opinion of some, it may have been poorly developed land, perhaps it was a result of the recent magnitude 5.8 earthquake followed by a hurricane and a week of rain from the remnants of tropical storm Lee. Regardless of cause, the tough reality for these families is that their homes are condemned, they are in temporary housing and the homeowners are responsible for all costs to save the homes and rebuild the land.
While both families affected by this horrible tragedy are working to restore some sense of normalcy in their lives, we can't ignore the fact that these families face tremendous financial difficulties in the coming days and weeks.
Many have asked, "How can I help these families?" This website is dedicated to doing just that. If you are compelled to help, please click here for more information.
